HOLLEY COTHAM

The Derecho of July 15

10pm and I am drowning with worry in a metal can caught in a storm when we should have taken
shelter in the brick-and-mortar movie theatre where we just watched Despicable Me 4 instead of
trying to race against a blaring siren and tornado that follows while we are forced to pull into
a private property with a no trespassing sign and for a moment I worry that we will be caught
and arrested until I decide that jail is the preferred alternative to the morgue we will be sent
to if we can’t find safety so we pull into an alley hoping the two storage buildings on either
side will prevent the winds from feeling us tucked away or the tornado from seeing us
from the skies above but I can feel it looking so we put on Hurricane from the

Broadway show Hamilton in an ironic plea as we try to appease the drums
racing in our chests and drown out the hail pounding on the SUV
as the looming threat grows more real by the second and

threatens to pick up 4850 lbs of aluminum
and if the 2014 GMC Acadia was made of
tin I would say that we are just
    sardines pressed in close
              together waiting for the
              roof of our container
to be torn off as we
                                             are picked up and
                                                        tossed into the
                                                      gaping maw of
                                           something
                               much
                          bigger
                   than
                         us.
